Tuition

So, you do have the time to learn how to do it yourself? Fantastic!

It's possible (and encouraged!) to learn a lot from reading books and articles, but we know that sometimes it really helps to have someone that can show you what to do.

Fuelled on Coffee is happy to offer one-on-one home tuition in the Somerset area from our founding web developer and tutor Rob Swan. You can call it training, or tuition, or tutoring, or teaching if you like. It all comes down to the same quality learning experience.

If you want to book a session then simply drop Rob an e-mail including your phone number and he'll call you back ASAP.

What do I need?

Software

You don't need to buy anything. As we are concentrating on writing clean code the vast majority of work will be carried out using little more than Firefox, Notepad and an FTP client. If you don't have access to a computer or the internet at home our trainer is happy to tutor from his own Taunton domicile.

Ability

We are more than happy to tutor any age, ability and ambition. Whether you have a short term curiosity, a specific project in mind, or have a passionate desire to enter the web design industry.

You should never feel that you don't have what it takes to learn.

Cost

See our price list for the hourly cost of tuition.

Areas of knowledge

Tuition will be primarily steered by what you hope to achieve, but areas of knowledge covered typically include:

Theory

  • Getting started - explanations of domain names, hosting, and suggested reading and resources
  • Introduction to HTML - guiding you through the concept and practice of writing clean and valid HTML code.
  • Introduction to CSS - an introduction to CSS, how to use it, and an explanation of some of it's quirks and limitations
  • Accessibility and usability - guiding you through the concept of making a web site accessible and usable
  • PHP basics - introducing you to some of the simple, but very clever, things that you can do with PHP
  • MySQL basics - opening the door to the dynamic world of databases
  • Bitwise operators - We can cover some fairly advanced theories if you want to. For example, have a look at an example of the kind of tools we'll use in tuition, an online bitwise calculator, and see if you can work out why 3 and 5 equals 1

Specific applications

  • Tuition on setting up, customising, and maintaining a phpBB Forum
  • A guide to setting up a Wordpress Blog

Extras

  • As a tutee you will receive space on a test server where you can practice and apply all that you have learnt
  • Checklists will be provided to show you how much you have learnt and to enable you to review your knowledge
  • You will be given access to the teaching area of this site where you will be able to download resources and reference material used during your tuition
